Are AMSOIL motor oils “all-season” oils?

Answer: Yes. Because AMSOIL motor oils are formulated with premium synthetic base oils, they have superior high and low-temperature performance. Synthetic oils resist thinning out at high temperatures to maintain critical protection in extreme heat. They also minimize sludge and deposit formation in high-temperature operation. AMSOIL synthetic motor oils resist thickening in cold temperatures to provide rapid cold starts and improved low-temperature operation compared to conventional oils.

Extreme cold can cause conventional motor oil, transmission fluid and gear lubes to thicken, starving moving parts of necessary lubrication. In many cases, thick motor oil prevents vehicles from starting. Cold, thick transmission fluid results in delayed or sluggish shifts and inadequate protection for bearings in the axle housing are splash-lubricated, conventional gear lubes that are too thick at cold temperatures can starve internal components of essential lubrication, which causes excessive wear and premature failure. Conventional petroleum lubricants thicken because they often contain paraffin's (wax). While modern refining techniques remove most of the wax from petroleum oil, some wax-like molecules remain. These wax-like molecules are soluble at ambient temperatures above freezing, but crystallize into honeycomb-like structure at lower temperatures and cause fluid circulation problems. At start-up, this can leave working parts unprotected while lubricants warm to a temperature that allows it to flow.

AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants do not contain paraffin's. They provide outstanding low-temperature fluidity for fast, dependable winter starts, quick responsive shifts and immediate start-up protection.

Why are AMSOIL engine oils capable of extended drain intervals?

Why are AMSOIL engine oils capable of extended drain intervals?
Answer: AMSOIL engine oils are formulated using premium synthetic base oils, and the highest-quality additives, that provide extended-drain capabilities. Formulated with high-quality additives, AMSOIL engine oils achieve greater cleaning powers, while providing better equipment protection over longer oil drain intervals. The unique synthetic formulation and robust TBN retention of AMSOIL synthetic engine oils work to resist oxidation and neutralize the acids that shorten the service life of other oils. Its characteristic resistance to high temperature volatility (burn-off) helps reduce oil consumption, while maintaining viscosity over longer periods of time than other oils. Why Am I an AMSOIL Dealer?

I thought I would tell the story of why I am an AMSOIL Dealer.

I purchased my 2003 Ford Diesel pick-up from my Mom in 2005 after my Dad passed away. After the purchase, I started to check out how much an oil change was going to cost me. When I realized that it needed 15 quarts of oil I quickly found out that it was going to cost me more than $75 just to change the oil.

I remembered something about AMSOIL being the a synthetic oil that I should check out. I did some research, and learned that if I used AMSOIL, I wouldn't need to change my oil but just once a year, or 25,000 miles, whichever came first. Some quick calculations showed me that the cost of just one oil change a year verses needing 5, was going to save me some money right away.

I did some more research and found out that people were reporting better fuel mileage when using AMSOIL. I thought, well if that is true, then I will save some more there too.

I changed the oil and put in a regular AMSOIL Air Filter on the truck. My fuel mileage went up 2 miles per gallon. Let me say, that I still only change the oil in my diesel once a year, and I'm now over 129,000 miles.

I've put AMSOIL in all the places that need fluid on the truck. I also use all the AMSOIL filters, including the AMSOIL/InJen Intake cold air intake kit. We use AMSOIL in both of our 2008 Ford Focus', and a 1999 Chevy Suburban also. Since we have 4 vehicles and 4 kids, I don't have time to spend every 5,000 miles under a vehicle changing oil. I usually find a day to knock them out at one time. Then at various times during the year, I get out the grease gun to keep things lubed up. We use AMSOIL grease in the trailer axles, small engine oil in the lawn mowers, 2-cycle oil in the chain saw and weed wacker. I used the AMSOIL Quickshot to clean out a weed wacker someone gave me because he couldn't get it to run after just a couple of uses. He went out and bought a new one, and I used a little Quickshot and it runs like a champ.

Never being one to want to pay full retail for anything, I decided to become a dealer. I knew a couple of others that wanted to buy also, so I thought why not be a dealer and help out my friends also. I never had any intention of growing my business. During my first year, I saw some people really making some good money as Dealers. I decided to make a little extra effort at it and saw some good results. I renewed for 10 years, and started making some effort. I grew my business by trying to be honest and helpful. I found out that if you return phone calls, people generally order. I make a little effort every day to learn my business and stay up to date.

As a dealer, I've grown my business, which has helped us pay some bills when things are tight. I've bought saddles for the horses, and extras for the kids. Most of those things wouldn't be possible without the extra income. I'm by no means getting rich of the AMSOIL income, but it does help off-set a few things.

The Right Environmental Choice

INNOVATION, EFFICIENCY & SOLUTIONS
Our mechanized society cannot function without lubricants. The dilemma is oil is both necessary for our life-style and potentially destructive to nature. Quite simply, we must select innovative, efficient products that will help solve our pollution problems.

The introduction of AMSOIL synthetic motor oil in 1972 set all new standards for motor oil quality. AMSOIL lubricants are 100% synthetic. They are specially designed to protect engine components, reduce emissions, last longer, reduce fuel consumption and prevent environmental pollution. From the beginning, AMSOIL synthetic motor oils have out-performed conventional petroleum motor oils on all counts.
AMSOIL synthetic motor oils resist chemical breakdown and sludging which keeps engines cleaner. They have been specifically designed not to oxidize, volatilize or shear back, resulting in a motor oil that lasts longer than conventional petroleum motor oils. While petroleum motor oil manufacturers recommend oil changes every 3,000 miles, AMSOIL synthetic motor oils protect engine components up to 35,000 miles or 1 year, dramatically extending oil change intervals.
AMSOIL PRESCRIPTION FOR PREVENTION:
According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Pollution Prevention Requirements, the first step in revitalizing a cleaner nation is pollutant source reduction.

AMSOIL accomplishes this by extending the interval between motor oil changes which can reduce the source of motor oil pollution more than eleven times.
Consider this: in 1993 an estimated 189.5 million motorized vehicles were on the road in the United States alone, and an estimated 700 million motorized vehicles were in operation throughout the world. If, by petroleum oil manufacturer’s recommendations, these vehicles have their oil changed every 3,000 miles on an average five-quart system, almost 1 billion quarts of used oil will be generated each month.
So are we drowning in oil? It is estimated at present that over 240 million gallons of oil are improperly discarded annually. Dumping 240 million gallons of oil is nearly the same as two Exxon Valdez spills each month.
How dangerous is used oil? Just one quart can produce a two acre oil slick. One gallon of oil can make one million gallons of water too foul to drink and 35 ppm of oil will kill fish. Improperly disposed used oil is dangerous.
Improperly dumped used oil seeps through landfills into ground water, disrupts bacterial digestion in sewer treatment plants and washes into lakes and harbors. At present, used motor oil is the largest single source of oil pollution in our nation’s waterways.
Certainly the first thing we can do is not create so much used oil to begin with, and we can recycle the used oil we have. Both synthetic and conventional motor oils can be recycled at any used oil recycling center.
Where Does All the Used Oil Go?
40%is dumped on the ground or down the sewer.
21% is thrown out with the trash, ending up in landfills.
6% is burned.
19% is reused for miscellaneous purposes.
14% is recycled.
PREVENT BILLIONS OF QUARTS FROM BEING DUMPED
Most automobile manufacturers recommend oil drain intervals of 3,000 to 6,000 miles for petroleum motor oils. AMSOIL recommends up to a 35,000-mile oil change which is 5 to 11 times fewer oil changes. Just think about the savings on the environment if, for example, the 135 million cars (excluding trucks, buses and taxis) in the United States were equipped with AMSOIL motor oil. Assuming an average service life of 100,000 miles and a sump capacity of 5 quarts per car, an oil change every 3,000 miles will generate 170 quarts of waste oil per year. That same car using AMSOIL and changing the oil every 25,000 miles will only generate 20 quarts of used oil per year. That is a difference of 150 quarts of used oil per car per year that can be saved. If we multiply the 150 quart savings out for all 135 million cars, the United States could see a reduction in waste oil of some 20.3 Billion quarts of oil. If you put 20.3 billion quarts of used oil into 55-gallon barrels and loaded them onto semi-trucks, a line of trucks would stretch end-to-end from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. and back to Los Angeles.

AMSOIL SOLUTIONS
For nearly three decades, AMSOIL INC. has been recognized as the leader in synthetic lubrication technology. AMSOIL was the first to introduce a synthetic motor oil qualified by the American Petroleum Institute, the first to recommend 25,000-mile/1-year drain intervals, the first to recommend 35,000-mile/1-year drain interals, and the first to implement a system for dramatically increasing drain intervals with oil analysis. Decades of research, laboratory analysis and millions of engine miles have kept AMSOIL the leader in automotive applications for synthetic lubrication. Although the results have paid off in maximizing efficiency and minimizing waste, they are not conclusive. AMSOIL is the leader in synthetics and with continued research, analysis and product development will remain the industry’s leader.

LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE
In 1983 AMSOIL created the TRI-GARD system. The life of a lubricant is dependent on the quality of oil and the filtration system’s ability to keep it clean. The AMSOIL TRI-GARD system incorporates AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil, the AMSOIL Foam Air Filter, the AMSOIL By-Pass Filter and oil analysis to dramatically extend the oil change interval. Less oil changed means less oil disposal and less oil pollution.

With regards to the environment, the AMSOIL TRI-GARD System is the most technologically sound, environmentally friendly motor oil program to reduce oil disposal.
ECOLOGICAL AND ECONOMICAL BENEFIT
REDUCES EMISSIONS, INCREASES ENGINE LIFE
Each year nearly 600 million gallons of motor oil are burned and exit through the tailpipes of cars and trucks,
creating emissions pollution. Petroleum oils volatilize (burn off) more readily than AMSOIL synthetic oils and
create more emissions pollution. The graph below shows the results of six oils that underwent the NOACK Volatility Test. Of all the oils tested, AMSOIL shows dramatically less weight
loss . . . less than half the weight loss of its closest counterpart. Some oils tested lost almost 20 percent of their weight. That means almost one fifth of the oil boils away and is released into the environment. For most cars, that’s approximately a quart of oil being burned and expelled into nature. The thicker oil left behind after volatization contributes to damaging deposits, sticky piston rings and oil blow-by, all of which cause reduced engine life, reduced fuel economy and increased air pollution.
GREATER FUEL ECONOMY
The advanced lubricity (slipperiness) of AMSOIL synthetic lubricants has been proven to increase fuel economy by 2-5%. AMSOIL reduces friction and allows your engine to use its heat-energy more efficiently.

HOW MUCH IS 5%?
If a person averages more than 15,000 miles each year, and spends an average of $3.00 per gallon of gas, a 5% savings would be more than $90 per year (assuming an average of 25 mpg).

Synthetic vs. Conventional Motor Oils

What is the difference between synthetic and conventional oil?
Answer: Oil, whether synthetic or petroleum-based, consists of molecular chains of hydrogen and carbon atoms, referred to as hydrocarbons. Petroleum crude oil is a thick, highly flammable dark-brown or greenish liquid with high energy densities. Many contaminating elements exist in this complex mixture of hydrocarbons, including sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen and metal components such as nickel or vanadium. Petroleum crude oil is the raw material used for a wide variety of petrochemicals, including solvents, fertilizers, plastics and lubricants.
The oil refining process separates the various types of molecules in the oil by weight, resulting in a concentrated batch suitable for today’s uses such as gasoline, LPG, kerosene or base oils for lubricants. The chemical composition of conventional motor oil can vary substantially and depends on the raw crude oil refining process.
While petroleum base oils are refined, synthetic base oils are manufactured and can achieve a higher performance level. Synthetic oil is chemically engineered for a certain molecular composition with a tailored and uniform structure. Such fine-tuned control over the final molecular composition of synthetic oils is the key to the superior performance properties of these fluids. Designing molecular structures in a planned and orderly fashion results in molecules, and end-products, that are far more stable than their refined petroleum counterparts.

Why AMSOIL Synthetics Now?

Why Now?
  • Automakers are moving up to synthetics
  • Helps vehicles last longer
  • Saves time & money

Automakers are moving up to synthetics.

Modern engine technology is placing more burden on motor oils. Vehicle manufacturers are under tremendous pressure to provide fuel-efficient vehicles that produce fewer emissions than their predecessors. They employ a variety of techniques to improve efficiency and reduce emissions, and nearly all of them negatively impact motor oil. Engines are smaller, yet produce more power. They often rely on turbos or unique fuel injection systems that can increase the amount of contaminants introduced into the oil. Synthetic lubricants contend with these additional stresses better than conventional lubricants. AMSOIL synthetic lubricants deliver the robust film strength, extreme-temperature protection and maximum fuel efficiency automakers are looking for.

AMSOIL synthetic lubricants help vehicles last longer.

AMSOIL synthetic motor oils help engines run at peak efficiency. Their pure, uniform molecular structure results in maximum friction reduction and outstanding wear protection. Lubricated components move more freely and remain closer to like-new condition, longer.

AMSOIL synthetic lubricants save time and money.

AMSOIL synthetic lubricants deliver outstanding protection and extended service life. Fewer oil changes to perform, less oil to buy and reduced overall maintenance costs.

Using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants can help the environment.

Consider the savings on the environment if, for example, the 243 million cars (excluding trucks, buses and taxis) in the United States were equipped with AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil. If each vehicle has an oil capacity of five quarts, accumulates 15,000 miles annually and has the oil drained every 5,000 miles, practicing extended drain intervals with AMSOIL Signature Series would reduce the amount of oil used in the U.S. annually by over 2.4 billion quarts.
In addition, each year millions of gallons of motor oil are burned and exit through the tailpipes of cars and trucks, creating emissions pollution. Petroleum oils volatilize (burn off) more readily than AMSOIL synthetic oils and create more emissions pollution. The thicker oil left behind after volatilization contributes to damaging deposits, sticky piston rings and oil blow-by, all of which cause reduced engine life, reduced fuel economy and increased air pollution.

WHY SYNTHETICS?

Why Synthetics?
  • Superior wear protection
  • Excellent fuel economy
  • Outstanding extreme-temperature performance
Conventional lubricants are refined from crude oil. Contaminating elements such as sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen and metal components such as nickel or vanadium are inherent to crude oil and cannot be completely removed through the refining process. The oil refining process separates the various types of molecules in the oil by weight, leaving molecules similar in weight but dissimilar in structure.
Synthetic lubricants, on the other hand, are chemically engineered to form pure lubricants. Synthetic lubricants contain no contaminants or molecules that don't serve a designed purpose. They are made from molecules that are saturated with a higher percentage of carbon-hydrogen bonds, leaving fewer sites to which other, harmful molecules can attach and attack the molecular composition of the oil. In addition, their smooth, uniform lubricating molecules slip easily across one another. In short, synthetics' versatility and pure, uniform molecular structure impart properties that provide superior friction-reduction, optimum fuel efficiency, maximum film strength and extreme-temperature performance conventional lubricants just can't touch.

AMSOIL Testimonial

Dear Jeremy and Everyone at AMSOIL,

I had to write you to share my findings. We received our 2006 IQ race sled in October and began testing and prep for the 05-06 race season. Prior to that Kristen had been using her 2004 Pro X for a practice sled on the wood chip track.
As you know Kristen won 2 points Championships, a world championship, and multiple races on that sled. Since then the sled has been drag raced, trail rode, and used on the chip track. I always did routine maintenance and prep work. I've had the chain case apart, suspension apart and rebuilt the shocks multiple times. I have used AMSOIL products exclusively on this machine since new. Chain case Lube, suspension grease, shock oil, and engine oil. Starting with the series 2000, then Dominator. After every race I would check over the entire sled and never found any component broken or damaged due to a lubrication problem.
Compression and scope checks shown the engine sound and strong so I never had it apart. Now after two years of pounding that sled I thought I'd better rebuild it. Running the sled on the chip track and dirt was sure to have caused some scoring and wear, even though compression checks showed no changes.

Well, I tore the whole sled apart. engine, chain case, suspension, I've checked bearing, bushings, gears, chains and all internal engine parts. Other than a little scuffing on the intake side of the piston skirt, nothing wore, no extra play in bearings and everything was within tolerance. I credit this to AMSOIL lubricants. No other products have been used in this sled. Once again, AMSOIL products not only proved their durability, but exceeded my expectations. Just by our choice in lubrication, we boosted our performance, increased the reliability, and protected the components of our sled.

Thanks AMSOIL for the quality product that does more than advertised.

Sincerely,

Brian Leirmoe

Why AMSOIL?

Why AMSOIL?
  • World's first API-qualified synthetic motor oil
  • Leader in synthetic lubricant technology
  • The only 25,000-mile oil

The introduction of the world's first synthetic motor oil to meet American Petroleum Institute service requirements in 1972 set all-new standards for motor oil quality. AMSOIL synthetic motor oil outperformed conventional petroleum motor oils on all counts. It was clear from the start that this innovative product would play a major role in engine performance and engine life.
AMSOIL has remained steadfast in its commitment to quality and precision lubricant engineering, leading the charge over the past four decades with many industry firsts. This quality-first commitment has driven the introduction of numerous synthetic lubricants, premium filtration technologies and fuel additives that provide tangible, real-world value.
Today, virtually every other motor oil manufacturer has recognized the superiority of synthetic lubricants and has followed the AMSOIL lead with introductions of synthetic motor oils of their own. They spend millions of dollars advertising their "new" and "revolutionary" products. No one, however, can match AMSOIL experience. Accept no substitutes - AMSOIL is "The First in Synthetics."

AMSOIL: Changing Times

THERE ONCE WAS A TIME WHEN PETROLEUM MOTOR OILS WERE ADEQUATE. AUTOMOBILE ENGINES WERE LARGE, OIL SUPPLY WAS GENEROUS, AND OIL FLOW WAS MODERATE. UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS, THERE WERE NO SEVERE DEMANDS PLACED ON YOUR ENGINE'S LUBRICATING SYSTEM.
BUT TIMES HAVE CHANGED! TODAY'S ENGINES NOT ONLY WORK HARDER AND RUN HOTTER, THEY ALSO HAVE LESS OIL CAPACITY AND PUMP IT MUCH FASTER. TODAY'S HIGH-PERFORMANCE ENGINES NEED TECHNICALLY-ADVANCED PROTECTION... THEY NEED AMSOIL SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL.
THE SUPERIOR LUBRICATION PROPERTIES OF AMSOIL SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL PICK UP WHERE OLD-FASHIONED MOTOR OILS LEAVE OFF. AMSOIL IS CHEMICALLY FORMULATED TO STAND UP TO THE HIGHER TEMPERATURES, CHURNING RPM'S, AND EXTREME PRESSURES OF MODERN ENGINES. AMSOIL'S LONG-LIFE SYNTHETICS ALSO FEATURE DRAMATICALLY-EXTENDED DRAIN INTERVALS... THEY CONTINUE TO COOL, LUBRICATE, AND PROTECT YOUR ENGINE LONG AFTER CONVENTIONAL OILS HAVE BROKEN DOWN.
TIMES HAVE CHANGED. . . WHY NOT SWITCH TO THE PIONEER IN SYNTHETIC LUBRICANTS... AMSOIL 100% SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL.

CALIFORNIA TAKES ON THE 3,000-MILE OIL CHANGE MYTH, AGAIN

In 2008 the state of California launched a multi-channel campaign to debunk the 3,000-mile oil change myth. The state created a website, banner ads and a concentrated PR campaign in an effort to inform motorists that unnecessary oil changes are bad for the environment.
This past month the L.A. Times printed a story noting that In December 2006 Consumer Reports spoke out against unnecessary oil changes.
The 3,000-mile oil change interval is obsolete as a standard.

From its inception in 1972, AMSOIL has been the leader in performance and convenience with its 25,000-mile/one-year oil change interval guarantee, an earth-friendly alternative that you can rely on.

REDUCE OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL WITH AMSOIL

Industry tests have shown improved fuel economy of 2 - 5% in vehicles using synthetic lubricants. Many AMSOIL customer testimonials tell of even greater savings. If all cars in America used AMSOIL synthetic motor oil, gear lubes and drive train fluids, we would save enough fuel to drive to the sun and back 165 to 420 times over.* DocumentationThe numbers in this calculation were based on 1998 data on Domestic Motor Fuel Consumption by Type of Vehicle, 1970-1998.* 1998 was most recent year for complete data, but each succeeding year has seen an increase in these numbers, so it can be postulated that the numbers would actually be higher. Domestic Fuel Consumption Data CARS Fuel Consumption, All Cars 72 billion gallons 2% OF 72 BILLION = 1.44 Billion gallons of fuel consumed 5% OF 72 BILLION = 3.66 Billion gallons of fuel consumed Average miles per gallon: 21.4 miles per gallon at 2% = 30.8 billion miles (1.44 x 21.4) at 5% = 78.3 billion miles (3.66 x 21.4) How far is 30.8 billion miles? DISTANCE TO SUN = 93 million miles Round Trip 186 million miles To Sun & Back = 165 round trips if fuel use is reduced 2% 420 round trips if fuel use is reduced 5% DISTANCE TO MOON = 238,857 miles Round Trip = 477,714 miles Trips to Moon and back = 64,473 round trips if fuel use is reduced 2% 163,000 round trips if fuel use is reduced 5% TRUCKS Fuel Consumption, All Trucks = 30.8 billion gallons Documented fuel savings by switching to AMSOIL lubricants in engine and throughout drivetrain = 8.2% 8.2% OF 30.8 BILLION = 2.52 BILLION Gallons Fuel usage, average miles per gallon for over the road trucks = 6.4 mpg 2.52 billion gallons @ 6.4 miles per gallon = 16.128 billion miles that U.S. trucks would be able to travel on the fuel saved by switching to AMSOIL.This equates to 86 trips to the sun and back.(16.128 billion divided by 186 million) Or 33,760 trips to the moon and back. Experts Don't Always Know What They Are Talking About

By Ed Newman, Marketing & Advertising Manager, AMSOIL INC. Experts perform a valuable function in our modern world. Whenever we get into an argument, whether heated or as a diversion, it isn't long before we reach for a forceful quote or two from an expert. Experts strengthen our confidence in views we've chosen to defend. Experts supposedly know what they're talking about because they've got the inside track on specialized knowledge. Experts are called upon to give us the final word in matters both obscure and self-evident.And sometimes experts are wrong.Minnesota's recent governor's race is a prime example of the experts being wrong. Polls consistently showed Jesse Ventura to be running third and the pundits gave him no chance of winning. Jesse was almost always discussed in terms of whether his candidacy would hurt Coleman more than Humphrey. History shows us that misguided predictions are nothing new. In 1876 an internal memo at Western Union declared, "This 'telephone' has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us." According to Dr. Lee De Forest, inventor of the vacuum tube and father of television, man would never reach the moon regardless of all future scientific advances. In 1949, Popular Mechanics boldly asserted that "computers in the future may weigh no more than 1.5 tons." Actually, there have been a lot of embarrassed experts when it comes to assertions about computers. The editor in charge of business books for Prentice Hall in 1957 said, "I have travelled the length and breadth of this country and talked with the best people, and I can assure you that data processing is a fad that won't last out the year." Commenting on the microchip, an engineer at the Advanced Computing Systems Division of IBM said, "But what . . . is it good for?" This was in 1968. By 1977, the chairman and founder of Ken Olson expertly demonstrated his prescience by exclaiming, "There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home." I still remember hearing opinions of people who shared this sentiment. The entertainment industry has produced a few guffaws as well. "Who wants to hear actors talk?" said H.M. Warner of Warner Brothers in 1927. Gary Cooper, in turning down the leading role in "Gone With the Wind" said, "I'm just glad it'll be Clark Gable who's falling on his face and not Gary Cooper." And when the Decca Recording Company rejected the Beatles in 1962, their in-house experts assured management that, "guitar music is on the way out." Yeah, right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. In fact, misguided experts embarrass themselves in nearly every field of endeavor." Airplanes are interesting toys but of no military value," said Marechal Ferdinand Foch, Professor of Strategy of the Ecole Superieure de Guerre. In 1899 Charles H. Duell, Commissioner of the U.S. Office of Patents, declared "Everything that can be invented has been invented." I suppose the inventiveness of 19th century inventors left him pretty much blown away and incapable of conceiving anything new. Hmmm.If you listen around, you'll hear experts cited in our industry, too. Have you never heard any of these? "Synthetics are too expensive. They'll never sell.""Synthetics are a fad." "Oil should be changed every three thousand miles, even if it's synthetic." I suppose it does me little good to quote experts who think otherwise. Recent tests at Mobil have demonstrated synthetic motor oils with a three year, 25,000 mile life span. AMSOIL has had 25,000 mile drain intervals for 25 years, only recently introducing a motor oil inside a somewhat "normal" range, that is, 7500 miles.... which some insist is still too long. Some "experts" are saying, for example, that quick lubes will lose money if drain intervals are extended. I beg to differ. Extending drain intervals may provide an opportunity to make more money. Quick lube operators can begin to charge a premium for a high end synthetic motor oil and a lower price for conventional petroleum products. I am well aware of the fact that you can easily use this argument to discredit my views as a so-called "expert." In point of fact, I am not asking anyone to take my word on anything. What I would really like is for the industry, and you as individuals, to take an open mind approach to all these things. Listen to everything. Question everything. Get informed. Find out for yourself. I like what Joe Haggard said in his October "As I See It" column when he said that we "need to filter all the data that comes through our senses. There are a lot of gems in the flow, but a lot of garbage, too." He went on to spell out some of the criteria he uses to filter information. "Make a vow to bypass all those inputs based on greed, lust or self-enhancement at the expense of others. In short, have a strong conscience. Don't lie, cheat or steal if ever influenced to do so by others."We live in a very complicated age. You, as quick lube owners and operators, are perceived as experts by those who entrust their vehicles to you. You have a responsibility to your customers to become truly informed so that your advice is reliable and trustworthy. You certainly don't want to be numbered with those who must later eat their own words. Consider the words of those drillers whom Edwin L. Drake tried to enlist in his project to drill for oil in 1859: "Drill for oil? You mean drill into the ground to try and find oil? You're crazy." This article originally appeared in National Oil and Lube News, March 1999 If you would like to discuss how you can go one year or 25,000 miles between oil changes, call me at (877) 760-9048 or send me an email info@huskersynthetics.com.
